In many parts of the country, the weather is finally beginning to turn. It appears as though the cold weather is coming to an end, the snow has finished falling, and the ice has possibly finished freezing our roads.

We don’t need to wear our wool sweaters, warm scarves, thick overcoats, and gloves. We can start to put away the shovels and snow blowers. And the best part: we can finally start preparing for spring.

This can mean something different for each person, whether it is breaking out last year’s sandal collection, finding your old sunglasses, or pumping the tires in your bicycle.

But for many people, spring means one thing: gardening time! Yes, once the risk of frost is over, gardening lovers can start to think about getting back to their gardens to grow the vegetables, herbs, and flowers they and their families love.

But as we get more and more conscious about the environmental impact of our behavior, also known as our carbon footprint, we may be thinking about better ways to garden. There are a lot of adjustments that can be made to make your garden “greener,” and one important adjustment is in the way you deal with pests.

Using environmentally friendly pest control is good for a number of reasons. For one, eco-friendly pest control will not harm the pests like non-eco-friendly methods tend to do.

Second, it will not harm the environment. If you use an eco-friendly method, you will not be introducing toxic chemicals into your local environment and water supply. So keep reading to find out what you can do in your garden.

First, what kind of pests do you have?

Before you can determine how to handle them, you need to know what kind of pests you are dealing with. Different pests require different solutions to get them out of your garden. You should use an integrated pest control plan in place of conventional pesticides, but this means determining whether you have an insect problem, a mole problem, something else, or a combination.

One Option: Companion Planting

Companion planting is a fantastic option for using nature to defend against itself. This method involves a gardener purposely planting two plants next to each other because they lure in complimentary insects. For example, if you plant some dill alongside your tomato vine, then the vine’s hornworms will find themselves at the mercy of the braconid wasps attracted by the dill plants.

Electronic Repellers Scare Away Animals Without Hurting Them

If you are like many gardeners then you probably do not want to do lasting harm to the animals in your local environment, even if they are doing lasting harm to your garden. Whether you are dealing with deer, rabbits, rats, moles, skunks, or raccoons, these animals can do real damage to your garden.

But that does not mean you should poison them with toxic pesticides. Use an electronic repeller instead. Without actually harming the earth or the animals, the repellers emit high frequency sound waves that irritate and confuse these animals, and chase them out of your garden!

Use Organic or Homemade Pesticides

There are a lot of easy ways to make your own, non-toxic pesticides at home. One great way is to simply mix citrus oil with cayenne pepper. Add a little bit of organic castile soap, shake it all together, and use it to get rid of ants, slugs, and roaches!
