I think too many plus-sized women try to hide their figures under yards of flowing fabrics in the mistaken belief no one will notice they are carrying a few extra pounds.
In reality, all this does is give a lovely woman the appearance of a walking circus tent. With a little attention to clothing shape, texture and color, women of any size can achieve a chic and stylish look.
I can’t stress enough the importance of well-constructed, proper-fitting foundation garments. This is not the place to cut corners. Those worn, stretched-out bras will not do “the girls” justice. It’s worth the investment to buy better quality undergarments that will give your figure a lift and make your body a smooth canvas for the rest of your wardrobe.
This does not mean you must harness yourself into a whalebone corset. There are plenty of modern fabrics that comfortably shape, smooth and support plus-sized figures.
That Hawaiian-print Muumuu is not your friend. Tent dresses are comfortable, and fine for around the house, but they give even a young woman a matronly look. For out in public, select garments that give some definition to your waist, even if your waist is not as narrow as you would like.
Woven fabrics and sturdy knits provide a crisp, tailored look and are a better choice than skimpy fabrics. Plus size tunics are a versatile option. The hip-skimming style elongates the look, and you can accessorize for casual or formal wear. The addition of a belt or self-fabric tie will add some waistline definition.
Black is a slimming color, but if that is all you wear the appearance of being in perpetual mourning can’t help but drag down your mood. A zaftig friend of mine, who always looks sharp, gave me a bit of advice about wearing black. Use it for your outer layers.
A light-colored blouse worn under a tailored black jacket is an instant slenderizing combination. Stick with solid colors and smaller prints for those bright, eye-popping jewel toned colors. With neutral earth tones, you can be a little more daring with prints, although it is best to avoid horizontal stripes of any color.
If you are self-conscious about a wide derriere or saddlebag thighs, pay particular attention to the flow of your slacks. Stay away from pleated trousers, which only add bulk, and pants that are narrow at the ankles, such as skinny jeans and leggings.
These will accentuate the width of your hips. A wide-legged pant or boot-cut flair will create a balanced, tailored look. Seek a hem length that brushes the top of your shoes. While Capri-style pants are cute, they have the effect of visually cutting your legs in half, making you appear about a foot shorter.
If you absolutely must wear cropped pants, try pairing them with open-toed sandals to regain some of that lost height.
I know it is frustrating to shop for clothes when clothing styles all seem designed for ultra-thin bodies, but hopefully these tips will give you some confidence as you struggle in front of those three-way dressing room mirrors seeking your personal style.
