Have you ever turned up to a party wearing the same jewellery as someone else? Awkward! Avoid this fashion faux pas by customising your accessories.

All the divas out there, celebrate – with customised jewellery, you can make your accessories exactly the way you want them. It doesn’t have to be expensive either! Get a unique look today that feels truly special. Here’s how you can save money on your customised jewellery:

Downgrade Purity

If you don’t know your carats from your carrots, 18K equals 75% of pure gold, plus 25% of other metals. Instead of aiming high, go for 14K (58.5%) and save yourself a lot of money. 950 (95%) platinum? What about 900 (90%)? At the end of the day, it just needs to look pretty.

All That Glitters Is Gold

Yellow, rose, and white gold…does this mean anything to you? If you’re not particular about your precious metals, choose yellow gold rather than white. Why? White gold is ‘flashed’ with rhodium, meaning more labour and steeper costs for your jewellery.

Be Frugal On The Gems

Simplicity is beautiful, so instead of blinging up your accessories, choose fewer stones. A focal piece can really carry off an exquisite metal, such as silver or gold. Too many stones can look cluttered and a highly intricate design will cost you big bucks – the amount of labour (and so extra cost) that goes into custom pieces is what gets custom jewellery its bad name.

Gems are split into two categories: precious and semi-precious. Choose something beautiful but less pricy to set your jewellery, such as an emerald – it’s certainly different and absolutely stunning.

There are no real, defined value systems for gemstones – they’re judged piece-by-piece by the four c’s: cut, clarity, colour, and carat. The important thing is, whatever gemstone you choose, it looks beautiful. Think about your skin tone and colouring; is there a gemstone that will bring out your eyes?

Consider Palladium

Cheaper than gold, and yet rarer, to the naked eye there’s no difference between palladium and platinum. Due to platinum’s big name, palladium seems to have been completely sidelined. As sources steadily run out for palladium, this precious metal will start to make headlines, so grab it while it’s relatively cheap!

Out With The Old…

All of us have valuable jewellery that we’ve outgrown or is left unworn in our drawers. Give these old relics a new lease of life by recycling them! Damaged heirlooms can be melted down to form rings, bracelets, and necklaces full of history. Unwanted gifts can be transformed into lovely pieces.

If you’re planning a wedding on a shoestring, you can ask your friends and family to give unwanted gold jewellery as bridal shower gifts. With all these contributions, you can make custom wedding rings with real symbolic significance.

The same goes for precious stones – you can take these too from worn and forgotten jewellery to be transplanted into your custom-made wonder!
